Good morning, my name is Dr. Mary Edwards Long.  I am a dentist located on the beautiful beaches of Gulf Shores, Alabama. Every day I am asked by patients “how do I make my teeth whiter”. As a dentist, I learned many ways we can achieve this! Today we will discuss my first approach which will be the simplest.

Think of all the different food and drink we ingest daily. There are sodas, coffees, fruit juices, wines and a myriad of foods that are dark (blueberries for example). This is one way in which our teeth get stained and appear darker! How do we remove those stains? Well regularly brushing twice a day helps, especially after eating or drinking one of those darker food/drinks! Even rinsing after a glass of red wine helps to decrease the amount of stain that sticks to your teeth.

Another method to help whiten your teeth is by visiting your dentist at least twice a year for a cleaning. Your dentist and hygienist can use more aggressive tools like a course polishing paste or a “water pik” to remove that extrinsic staining. They can see areas which require more attention and have the knowledge to help you get that bright, white smile. Most insurances cover these visits at 100% so there is no extra cost to you, the patient! If you do not have dental insurance, inquire with the dentist office to see if they offer any cleaning specials?

Please visit us soon for Part 2 of “How Do I Make My Teeth Whiter?”  In the next part I will examine how whitening toothpastes can be an excellent tool to maintain a bright, white smile.

Sincerely,
Dr. Mary Edwards Long
